Franchisees form the backbone of the franchise system. Just like how customers make a business sustainable, a franchise system would really just be a plan if there are no franchisees. Clearly, franchisees play a determinant role in whether a standalone business makes the transition into a franchise. But while "good" franchisees could help the franchise thrive with minimal attention from the franchisor, "bad" ones could suck all the franchisor's time and even damage the franchise brand. It is exactly this reason that all (or at least most) franchisors have some sort of list of desired characteristics for the perfect franchise candidate in the back of their minds.
